Diamond Certification
A grading report is an independent laboratory's assessment of a diamond. It is your assurance that the stone is what it claims to be, and the only fair way to compare two diamonds.
Why certification matters
Two diamonds of the same carat weight can differ enormously in value. An independent report grades cut, color, clarity and carat to a consistent standard, so you pay for the stone you actually receive.
GIA and IGI
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) created the 4Cs and the international grading scale, and is widely regarded as the most consistent laboratory. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is one of the largest labs worldwide. Every Mesmerra diamond is graded by one of the two.
Reading a report
- Report number: unique to your diamond and often laser-inscribed on its girdle.
- Shape and measurements: outline, cutting style and dimensions in millimetres.
- 4Cs: carat weight, color, clarity and, for rounds, cut grade.
- Polish and symmetry: the finish and precision of the facets.
- Fluorescence: glow under UV light; faint or none is usually preferred.
- Clarity plot: a map of the stone's inclusions.
Verifying a report
Enter the report number on the laboratory's website (GIA Report Check or IGI Verify) to confirm the grading matches your certificate. A jeweler can also check the girdle inscription under magnification.
